Overview

Commonwealth’s Practice Management team is searching for a director to spearhead mergers and acquisitions (M&A) consulting and services as part of our dynamic and growing business consulting team. The ideal candidate brings extensive leadership skills and deep technical expertise that will strengthen our M&A offering for our affiliated advisors.

The Practice Management team serves as a strategic partner to Commonwealth advisors and their staff, helping them build healthy and growing businesses. The team provides consulting and programs to support advisors across a broad range of growth, transitions, scale and efficiency, and human resources needs. Advisor-facing M&A support and thought leadership is a central responsibility and increasing in importance given aging advisor demographics.

In this role, you will lead Commonwealth’s M&A consulting and services by overseeing and expanding resources provided to advisors. You will lead M&A engagements for complex and sensitive situations, manage liquidity offerings, and develop advanced thought leadership. Collaboration is key; you will work closely with the broader Practice Management team to strengthen M&A consulting. This position operates in a fast-paced, demanding, and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervising, fortifying, and institutionalizing M&A support for financial advisors
  • Managing liquidity offerings for advisors nearing succession with a focus on continuously streamlining, enhancing, and promoting the program
  • Conducting M&A consulting engagements for complex, sensitive, and escalated cases
  • Guiding buyers and sellers through the end-to-end acquisition process, including matchmaking, due diligence, valuation, deal terms, contracts, legal/tax outsourcing needs, and client transition
  • Enhancing and maintaining resources to help advisors determine valuation, set deal terms, and streamline due diligence between buyers and sellers
  • Improving matchmaking capabilities to connect sellers with qualified buyers and maximize fit
  • Providing expert guidance and training to consultants on the practice management team who are leading M&A engagements
  • Facilitating the contract review process to ensure that deals are aligned with regulatory, legal, and operational needs
  • Developing and maintaining an M&A playbook to help practice management consultants deliver consistent and high-impact engagements
  • Collaborating with team members to collect and synthesize deal data that drives strategic decisions, advisor consulting, and thought leadership
  • Managing relationships with third-party M&A vendors as well as collaborating with the Business Transitions team and other internal teams that support operational transition of practices
  • Presenting at Practice Management programs and Commonwealth conferences
  • Writing for the Commonwealth Business Review and The Independent Advisor blog

Core Strengths

  • Deep understanding of the RIA and broker/dealer landscape
  • Ability to artfully navigate client engagements in which highly technical and emotionally charged issues overlap
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently, collaboratively, and under pressure
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent listening, follow-up, interpersonal, and team building skills

Additional Skills and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or CVA a strong plus
  • 10+ years of experience supporting acquisitions/succession for wealth management firms
  • 15+ years of overall experience in the financial services industry
