Overview

Are you passionate about helping small business owners plan strategically for the future, overcome critical business challenges, and tackle day-to-day business operations issues? Our Practice Management team is looking for a consultant to lead engagements with multi-advisor firms as part of our dynamic and growing team. The ideal candidate is a creative problem solver, analytical thinker, strong communicator, and team player who has experience working with financial advisors in a consultative manner.

Our team serves as a strategic partner to Commonwealth advisors and their staff, helping them to build healthy and growing businesses. The team provides consulting services and programs to support advisors across a broad range of growth, transitions, scale and efficiency, and human resources needs. In this role, you will support our Multi-Advisor Firms team within Practice Management by leading engagements with ensembles and enterprises across a wide range of specialized needs and general business management issues.

We operate in a fast-paced, demanding, and dynamic environment. This position is ideally suited for a business consultant who strives to be a long-term partner and advocate for advisors, helping them to develop thriving and enduring organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting consultations with advisory firms across a broad range of practice management disciplines; helping them tackle complex and challenging issues from a holistic, strategic, and objective perspective
  • Addressing the specialized needs and business management issues of multi-advisor firms (g., ownership structure, pathways to partnership and partner exit planning, P&L modeling, organizational structure, operating scale, M&A)
  • Leveraging consulting skills and techniques to effectively engage clients, including discovery, providing feedback, responding to resistance, and implementation
  • Managing advisor M&A deals from inception through completion (e.g., matchmaking, deal structure, valuation, financing, contracting, and client transition)
  • Using data analytics to help firms assess performance using internal and external metrics
  • Delivering proactive business review engagements with top clients to support key business initiatives; soliciting feedback on the firm’s overall relationship with Commonwealth, and identifying opportunities to better leverage Commonwealth’s support and resources
  • Supporting senior consultants and leadership on-site engagements, as requested (periodic travel may be required when resumed by Commonwealth)
  • Leading projects to enhance value-added resources and services
  • Developing thought leadership in practice management areas of interest, presenting at practice management programs and Commonwealth conferences, and writing for the Commonwealth Business Review and the Commonwealth Independent Advisor blog, as needed

Core Strengths

  • Strong understanding of financial services, RIA, and broker/dealer industries
  • Extensive knowledge of the issues facing small business owners and financial advisors
  • Well-developed interpersonal and team-building skills
  • Proven ability to perform under pressure
  • Adaptability to work collaboratively or individually
  • Exceptional communication skills (verbal, written, listening, and follow-up)
  • Would also consider a career changer with deep business management expertise and consulting skills who is willing to make a significant and rapid investment of time to learn the industry

Additional Skills and Knowledge

  • 5+ years of experience in a practice management role
  • 10+ years of overall experience in the financial services industry
  • Experience working with multi-advisor firms is a strong plus
